A very short trip to the clinic today. Just a quick blood count (looks good, yay!) and we won't need to go back until Monday!
We spoke to Dr. P about Alan's eating, or continuing lack thereof. The tube stays in for now and will get switched to the other side when he pulls it out again so we can try to avoid a sinus infection. He seems to be used to it now, but then again, he seemed fine with it a week ago right before he pulled it out. Even though we had discussed the possibility of a G-tube with the docs, they aren't pushing the issue since he's doing fine so far, and although it would be nice for Alan to have his face back, it isn't worth doing surgery just for that.
His weight has bounced back from that first week we were home from the hospital and he was eating virtually nothing. Lots of playgroup mommies have been happily commenting on how chunky he feels now. That is all thanks to the tube-fed Pediasure though, since he eats a tablespoon or less of solid food everyday. The important thing right now is to keep his strength up for chemotherapy though, even though we're worried about him losing his eating skills. As long has he feeds himself a few crackers or puffs every day or so, we'll have to be satisfied. One thing at a time.
Yes, sorry about the food thing. The chemo really makes food unappealing, so I generally don't receover my appetite until RIGHT before my next chemo round!
ReplyDeleteMild, non-fatty foods are the ticket, so you're on the right track woth crackers, puffs (maybe Cheerios?) etc. I will e-mail some chemo-nutrition links.
