Lemonade Stand

Kevin's playgroup set up a lemonade stand yesterday on Alan's behalf. The kids wanted to raise money to buy Alan a present and it quickly grew in scope. Joanie planned a strategic location and time to take advantage of elementary through high school kids getting out of school, Russ made up an amazing banner with a picture of Alan, and Denise's cousin Kaz found a pair of face painters to really make it an event. Jaz & Em's grandmother promised matching funds, as she did for their cousin's lemonade stand (Dougal did his to support his aunt who is fighting cancer and inspired his cousins to do one for Baby Alan).



Everyone contributed to the stand with supplies, spreading the word, waving signs and waving people in. The face painters Dee Dee and Bubbles were amazing! They did incredible art work and donated their time for the cause. We can't thank them enough! One of the really inspiring sights was seeing people turn their cars around to join us after seeing Alan's adorable face on the banner. Even the weather cooperated, saving the rain drops until we were almost finished.

They raised over $400 dollars, including Grandma Jackie's contribution. More than the money though, we value the support offered from friends and strangers alike. Some people did U-Turns to offer a kind word and buy a lemonade and snacks. More than one mom or dad stayed to ask after Alan and offer their prayers. I heard one dad, after refusing to accept any change from his contribution, say that he couldn't imagine one of his kids was going through this.

I know the playgroup kids have been getting a lot more hugs lately. Tantrums, while not tolerated more, have been met with the thought "At least my baby is healthy". The crazy thing is, our friends have been thanking us - for letting them be a part of Alan's fight, for giving the kids a chance to learn about caring for one another and the value of community. I bawled when Joanie wrote that Trieste asked if Baby Alan was going to be all right now. We are so very thankful for such wonderful friends and community.
