Alan has been getting Fentanyl as needed throughout day, about once every 2 hours seems to be the sweet spot. The nurse today noted that wasn't very much, so we're happy he's slowly starting to get over the pain. The methadone is being administered in ever smaller doses to help him out.
The other thing we are fighting is boredom. He is quite immobile, in a way he hasn't been since the tumor first wrecked his hip and leg muscle almost 20 months ago. Luckily, we have our videos (Child Life at the hospital contributed A Shark's Tale to Alan's bag full of presents and Becky sent a copy of Happy Feet, the latest addition to our monochromatic animal collection) and lots of new toys to open. Everyone has been so generous, from dear little friends like Mackenzie who sent a box from Hawaii with a monkey lunch box to hold toys and treats for our little monkey, a big sack of toys given by the Houston Rockets when their mascot came to entertain the kids at the Ronald McDonald House, to dedicated volunteers at the House and Hospital - too many people to mention! Our friend Emily knows from experience what it takes to entertained a restricted child and she sent us a box of toys to be unwrapped as the need arises. We dove into it today - Alan unwrapped a bucket of Play Doh and shapes - between that and his crackers, what a mess! It should be enough to keep him occupied until he is mobile again.
After spending the afternoon with Aimee and her kids, Mommy and Kevin brought dinner and we all got to spend an evening together as a family. Kevin and Alan loved seeing each other and it was nice to do more than exchange some quick words while passing in the hallway. If things continue smoothly, we hope to be home soon so this become regular rather than rare.
